Now that the draft has wrapped and teams are putting finishing touches on their rosters with undrafted free agent signings, here’s a look at the Top 3 Raiders draft picks to keep an eye on as the season approaches. What are their strengths and weaknesses and how might they might help the team and make an impact on the field during the 2014 NFL season? Here’s a breakdown of their abilities:No. 1 Player to Watch: Derek Carr, Fresno State QBSTRENGTHS: Athletic with very good feet can roll the pocket, evade the rush or escape when pocket crumbles. Terrific arm talent releases from the ear and can make all the throws. Quick armed with wrist snap. Can alter his platform and throw on the move or off his back foot. Throws come out on time and accurately. Drills short to intermediate throws and flashes touch. Likes to play and it shows. Sells out to make a play. Record breaking production. Adapted to coaching/system change and receiver turnover. Improved ball security fumbled only once as a senior compared to 12 times the previous two seasons. Desirable intangibles for the position advanced maturity, leadership and intelligence. Shows poise and moxie. On field general who commands the huddle. Passionate about the game and works at his craft.WEAKNESSES: Lacks ideal height and has relatively small hands. Bulk is just adequate. Could stand to improve as a deep passer. At times tries to do too much and forces some throws. Occasionally throws off balance unnecessarily and sails some throws. Operated out of the shotgun and pistol and made a lot short/lateral throws and half field reads. Production is inflated by spread offense and porous Mountain West Conference defenses nine 2013 opponents (excluding an FCS opponent) ranked between 81st and 125th nationally in scoring defense and/or passing defense. Had his worst game in the Las Vegas Bowl against USC. The Raiders need to find a capable QB, and while Carr is young and inexpereinced he will get his shot in Oakland early and compete for a starting job in training camp. With the success of young quarterbacks in recent seasons, it’s not inconceivable to think Carr could pan out and might give the Raiders a decent chance to compete in a tough division this season.No. 2 Player to Watch: Keith McGill, Utah CBSTRENGTHS: Rare size with extremely long arms and large hands looks every bit the part. Very good athletic ability. Explosive recorded 39 inch vertical jump and 10 foot, 9 inch broad jump. Versatile and can play safety or corner.WEAKNESSES: Lacks the physicality and toughness desired at safety. Does not support the run aggressively or play to his size. Average transitional quickness. Footwork needs refinement. Recorded the worst 3 cone time (7.29 seconds) among cornerbacks at the combine. Will be a 25 year old rookie. Still has some junior college work habits and needs to learn what it means to be a pro. He slipped a bit in this draft due to concerns about his off the field issues, but if he can get it together as a professional and focus on honing his talent, he could be a steal for the Raiders.No. 3 Player to Watch: Travis Carrie, Ohio CBSTRENGTHS: Outstanding size looks the part of an NFL defensive back with a sculpted physique. Equipped to jam. Has speed to carry receivers vertically. Good zone awareness and ball reactions. Good hands to intercept. Sets the edge in run support. Smart and instinctive. Confident and competitive. Was a productive punt returner and has worked as a gunner.Carrie is a very savvy value pick in the seventh round. A player who was slated to be nabbed in Round 4 or 5 that fell this far could turn out to be a gem for Oakland. Perhaps concerns about his open heart surgury as a high school athlete led to his drop in the draft. He www.acuzilla.com shined at Ohio’s pro day and will hope he can continue to clean up finer points of his game at the professional level. You can see the complete list of players drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the table below.
